Tufts students hope to engineer a drinking water solution for Ugandan village

Clean water is something most Tufts students take for granted, but for the residents of Shilongo Village, Uganda, it’s a constant concern and just one of many quality-of-life issues that a group of Tufts students hopes it can help improve. This May, members of the Tufts branch of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) will be making the trek to Shilongo Village to assess the most pressing issues of the community and assess potential solutions.

Students hope new science publication will be a ‘Breakthrough’

A brand new student publication recently appeared on the Hill this semester, but if students didn’t pick up a copy within a day or two of its release, they might not have known. The demand for Breakthrough: Tufts’ Undergraduate Science Magazine, which covers both Tufts and worldwide scientific news, outstripped supply so greatly that the 500−copy print run of the first issue vanished from the usual student publication repositories almost as quickly as it appeared. 1 comment

For professors, giving easy grades can mean receiving good ones

A recent Kaplan Test Prep survey showed that almost half of college students use Web sites like RateMyProfessors.com to select classes that are rated as easy, which may be a factor in grade inflation at colleges across the nation. Jeff Olson, vice president of research at Kaplan Test Prep, said that the effects of professor rating sites have been underreported in the analysis of grade inflation over the past two decades.
