The Tufts University Police Department (TUPD) yesterday reported an assault on Colby Street outside of the Cousens Gym parking lot.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. last night when a woman who is not a Tufts student was jogging in the area. An individual approached her, called her a “dyke” and punched her under her left eye, according to TUPD Sgt. Richard McConaghy.

The woman returned home and immediately reported the incident to Medford Police Department, which notified TUPD. The suspect has not been identified and the woman could only provide a rough description, McConaghy said.

There are currently no leads on the suspect. “Nobody saw anything,” he said.

The Medford Police Department was not able to offer further details last night. A Medford officer said that the department referred the case to the detective’s unit and will be working in conjunction with TUPD to pursue the suspect.

FYI - this incident didn't occur "on campus" it didn't occur at the gym or in the gym lot. This incident occurred in Medford, more towards the Sci Tech building on Colby St. From what I understand, the perp. fled down the walkway between Colby St and the Cousens lot, but otherwise this crime had absolutely nothing to do with Tufts. The Tufts PD does patrol the SciTech and Cousens lot area (and you'll even see cruisers patrolling the cousens lot and the pathway), however that is more "fringe campus." I'm sure that most students would prefer they focus their time where the majority of students are - on or near the hill - rather than city of Medford streets such as Colby st, where this incident occurred. You should give Tufts PD more credit than you do - they are quick to reply and assist the Medford PD when Medford crimes cross over onto Tufts.

The Boston Globe is reporting this story but leaving out the information that the suspect called the jogger a "d*ke" when he punched her. Why do you suppose that is? I feel that information is critical to the community understanding what type of violence was perpetrated against this woman, whether it was used simply as derogatory language against a woman or in response to someone's apparent sexual orientation. Either way, leaving that aspect out of the broader reporting seems sketchy to say the least. Why would that information appear here in the Tufts Daily but mysteriously evaporate for the broader public?

I had the same feeling. And as a graduate, I no longer feel the need to act like the Tufts police do anything at all. Where are the officers patrolling unsafe areas? Requesting better lighting around Tufts? Acting genuinely concerned when a student is harassed, robbed, or verbally assaulted

It must be nice and cozy in that police station, because (other than sidling up next to each other in the Fletcher lot), that is the only place TUPD ever seems to be.

Wow, my alma mater never fails to get itself in the news these days............unfortunately, it's ALL bad news.........assaults, racial incidents, new policies due to "overactive" roommates, students playing quidditch, the most expensive Massachusetts college (while the economy is tanking). It just keeps getting better and better. Wake me up when one of the professors wins a Nobel Prize, ok?
